Welcome to the online home of the
Ceithearna Coille!
You've seen what we do, now find out the reasons why.
The Ceithearna Coille are a network of young Gaels who aim to heighten the presence of our lively tongue throughout Ireland by supporting Irish language social events (not just drinking in Conamara!) and conducting effective visual campaigns.
Despite having 100,000s of daily speakers, the Irish Gaelic community is often ignored or overlooked by English language media and many people in Ireland therefore do not realise how vibrant our native tongue actually is.
We want to change that. With groups working throughout the island, the Ceithearna Coille aim to raise awareness of Gaelic among our English-speaking counterparts and at the same time keep the Irish language establishment on its toes.
We embrace the advantages and benefits of modern Ireland's cultural makeup yet believe that our own indigenous language has not yet achieved true equality with English and its culture of globalisation. We want to change that too.
We support organisations such as Na Gaeil Óga and encourage all Gaels to take an active role in showing that our language is alive, kicking and leaping about the place like a wild thing.
Among the Ceithearna Coille's current priorities is a sticker campaign calling for complete bilingual signage in the South and for Irish/English street and road signs for pro-Gaelic areas of the North. We will continue with this policy until the Irish-speaking community's demands for equality have been met.
We also call on all businesses who trade in Gaeltacht areas to provide Irish language services.
Our campaigns of peaceful action are designed to create maximum awareness and will only affront those who are threatened by cultural and linguistic equality.
You can keep up to date with these and other campaigns here.
